Minutes
April 11, 2011

Present: Debi Gray, Larry Masterson, Walt Greiner, Floyd Hall, Dick Nessen, Tina Scharf, Leila Joseph, Mary Benton, David Furney, Andrew Rainville, Lindsay Goodro.

Minutes: The March minutes were accepted without discussion, without opposition.

Financial:

Larry explained the library’s first quarter financial statement. In general, we are in good shape both in staying within budget and cash flow. Walt is maintaining an accrual and expense schedule that will help identify potential cash shortfalls. One large unknown is what the price of oil will be this year.

Donation Update: Debi reported that we are still receiving donations from the annual appeal, including a very generous donation from one donor that is at least partly to be used for the maintenance of Susan’s Garden. We discussed how to use this unexpected money. Part will go into the garden fund and part may go into the general fund. Walt brought up the subject of a capital (as in building) fund and we discussed starting the fund with some of this donation. However, this was not voted upon. We agreed that there should be a line item in the budget for the building maintenance. We will continue this discussion later.

Volunteers:

The board approved up to $25 dollars for a gift for Harriet Szanto who works tirelessly for the library. Debi will buy this and give it to Harriet.

We will have a volunteer event – lunch or high tea – in June. Date and time TBA.

Standing Committees:

Building Maintenance:
The front of the desk needs to be painted. Leila and Tina will do this in May or June. Jim Brown’s high school class is making a new sign for the road. After some discussion, Walt offered to be in touch with Jim on design and materials. We have scheduled a Spring Clean-up Day for May 22nd at 10:00 AM. Tina will let interested volunteers know.

Fundraising:
Mary spoke about the pig-kissing contest idea, remarking that it would be better to have this event in the winter, perhaps during Hill Country Holiday in February 2012. For this year, though, we thought we would begin by trying to find a car or tractor to raffle off. Mary will call all the tractor dealerships and Tina will call all the car dealerships in the area. If that doesn’t pan out we’ll try something else. Mary has begun planning for the Memorial Day plant, book, etc. sale. Debi will help Mary “organize the organization” of that event, and Mary will get back to us with tasks.

Friends
Things inch along. Tina has sent out a survey for friends to fill out twice and so far (as of April 13) has heard from about 20 people. There’s a second meeting on May 11th, at 7:30 PM.

Officers:

We voted in the year’s officers. The slate was: Walt Greiner, president; Tina Scharf, vice president; Susie Wilmer, secretary. (We neglected to add Larry as treasurer). Since Susie wasn’t present, we agreed she has the right to decline the post if she wants to. Walt also said that this would most likely be his last year as president.

David Furney wants to retire from the board and we need to recruit someone to take his (appointed) place. We all agreed to call at least one person. Debi will also send out a request to the entire patron list.
